SDC is a unique public high school that has embraced a monumental challenge – preparing every student for college regardless of the academic and social challenges they face. We do so through engaging our students with our theme of Design & Construction. Our aim is to expand and diversify our design-related academic and professional opportunities, increase our use of design technologies, and further develop and deepen the connection between our theme and the traditional high school curriculum; all of this within the context of shrinking budgets and tightening resources.

We need your help…  We are raising $50,000 to create a state-of-the-art media/ technology lab.
SDC students will utilize this space to collaborate, research, and design with the latest technology as they
create solutions to the academic challenges ahead of them.

Volunteer Opportunities

Mentoring & Internship Opportunities
Individuals and Companies are able to get involved in our SDC “Menternship” Program. Work with our partnership team to create an experience that works for you an your organization. Mentoring opportunities can range from speaking to students at the school to establishing a regular connection with one student. Companies can have a group of students visit their workplace or employ an SDC student interns in his or her Junior or Senior year.

VISITING CRITICS
Bi-annually, the student-designers at SDC present their work at our Design Critiques. Professional volunteers are needed to sit on panels of visiting critics. These authentic experiences offer our students a unique opportunity to hone their design, critical thinking, and presentation skills.

TEACHING ASSISTANTS
Every SDC student begins his or her high school career by participating in Design Seminar with our resident architect. Professional volunteers are needed to support our students as they tackle real-world design problems in the studio. Teaching assistants have a powerful opportunity to impact our students’ intellectual growth.

CURRICULUM CONSULTANTS
In all content areas, SDC faculty members are attempting to strengthen the connection between the traditional curriculum and the history, principles, and application of architecture and design. Curriculum consultants pair with educators to examine current curriculum and plan creative ways to deepen these connections.
